Step to Duluth Pedometer Program

The Wellness Center is offering a new pedometer walking program that will challenge you to take enough steps to walk to Duluth in eight weeks. Duluth is 275 miles away or 550,000 steps (that’s just under 10,000 steps each day --the number of steps experts recommend for healthy adults!)

The eight-week program begins Monday, April 21, 2008. Cost is $25 ($15 if you already own a pedometer). You will receive a pedometer and a log book. The pedometer is yours to keep!

Win a Trip to Duluth! Those who complete the journey will be eligible for prize drawings including a night’s stay in Duluth, restaurant gift certificates, gas cards and other miscellaneous prizes!

Step to Duluth is open to everyone. You don’t need to be a member of the Wellness Center to participate. To sign up or learn more, call the Wellness Center at 537-9094 or email Theresa Boeck at Theresa.Boeck@averamarshall.org

Avera Marshall Opens Behavioral Health Center

Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center opened a 10-bed inpatient Behavioral Health Center in July 2007 to serve needs identified in southwest Minnesota. Avera Marshall remodeled a portion of the third floor of the hospital to create a secure, state-of-the-art center featuring a safe, peaceful environment designed for healing. A team approach to treatment includes a psychiatrist, nurses, social workers, therapists, direct caregivers and family members all working together to fulfill a plan of care for each patient. The center serves adults ages 16 to 65 with a need for short-term hospitalization, including treatment for conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder and other known behavioral health diagnoses. For more information on behavioral health services at AVera Marshall, call 507-537-9318.

The Future is Now: 64-Slice CT at Avera Marshall

The most advanced CT technology in the world is now available in Marshall. Avera Marshall installed a 64-slice CT scanner in January 2007. This scanner's unrivaled image quality produces sharp, detailed three-dimensional images allowing physicians to see internal injuries and disease in greater detail than ever before. And it produces those images with remarkable speed--performing a full-body trauma scan in about 10 seconds.

This new technology can reduce or eliminate the need for more invasive procedures in some patients. For example, patients with heart concerns may be able to have their condition diagnosed with a CT scan rather than undergoing a catheterization procedure. The scanner’s speed allows it to capture freeze-frame images of the heart and vessels in a single heartbeat. The detailed images allow providers to detect anomalies such as cancer at early stages which can increase the chances of a cure.

With this significant investment, Avera Marshall is able to bring technology to the region providing better diagnosis and increased comfort and convenience for patients.
